Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies are conditions where you need to seek immediate dental care to save teeth, bone or gums and to free you from pain. These are services that need to be attended to by a dentist because any delays could cause permanent damage or may require you to undergo more expensive and more complicated treatment procedures. Here are some examples of emergencies that may require you to contact your dentist.

Excruciating Pain

If you are experiencing pain anywhere in your mouth, contact us immediately. Toothaches can become unbearable don't give in to the urge to take painkillers and ignore the problem. It is best to consult with us right away, not only to relieve you of the pain but to identify the exact cause. You may think it's just a simple toothache but it could be associated with a medical problem concerning your ears or nasal tissues, especially if the pain seems to originate from the same area. Painkillers can give you temporary relief but the proper diagnosis will help you get the correct treatment and avoid complications.

Fractured Teeth

Did you have an accident that caused one (or more) of your teeth to break or get chipped? We can still save your teeth — as long as you contact us immediately after the accident with the pieces of your broken tooth/teeth. This will give you the chance to keep your natural teeth intact and avoid the cost of getting a crown or bridge procedure.

Foreign Object Between Teeth

Avoid using your teeth to bite all kinds of stuff rather than using the proper tools! When you do this you could injure or get foreign material lodged between your teeth. If this does happens, you can try to use dental floss to dislodge the material but if that doesn't work, you need to see us right away. Don't try forcing the foreign matter out as this may aggravate the pain, damage your teeth and gums, and/or cause bleeding. We can inspect the area carefully with our instruments and will know exactly how to proceed without causing any further damage.

Lost Filling or Crown

This can also result in pain and discomfort. The sooner you have it repaired or replaced, the better you will look and feel.

Infections

Please don't ignore small oral problems because you think you can handle the pain. Procrastination can lead to bigger problems that may need emergency dental services. One sign of an infection is pus on the gums. This may run deep into the gum tissue and can lead to loss of teeth and other gum or even bone issues. If this happens, call us right away to have the area examined and have the infection treated.

Bleeding

Bleeding can be caused by trauma in the gums, lips, cheeks, or tongue. You can try putting a cold compress on the area to stop the bleeding, but if that doesn't work, please contact us right away. We may need to stitch the injury or cauterize the tissue to stop the bleeding.

Some oral problems can wait a day or even a week before needing attention, but, it will benefit you to seek dental treatment right away to save your teeth and feel relief from pain.
